Eskenazi Health primary care physicians see to it that patients get the right care, in the right setting, by the most appropriate provider, and in a manner consistent with the patient’s desires and values. Establishing a relationship with an Eskenazi Health primary care provider offers you consistency and efficiency on a number of levels. Familiarity with a primary care physician helps personalize your care and save time that may have previously been spent explaining medical history, personal preferences and who you are.
Primary care is vitally important because through routine check-ups Eskenazi Health primary care physicians can detect potentially serious problems early on and begin treatments. According to the American College of Physicians, adults in the U.S. who have a primary care provider have 19 percent lower odds of premature death than those who only see specialists for their care.
Another measurable benefit of consistent quality primary care is it lowers health care costs. People who have a primary care provider save 33 percent on health care over those who only see specialists. Access to primary care helps keep people out of emergency rooms, where care costs at least four times as much as outpatient care. If everyone would schedule an appointment with a primary care provider first for their care, the annual savings in the U.S. would add up to an estimated $67 billion.
