• The Duvall Residential Center will host a Community Resource Day Sat., Aug. 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be health screenings, insurance information, and more. The center is located at 1848 Ludlow Ave. on the near east side.
• Adults looking for cheaper alternatives to pricey cable and satellite television packages are invited to learn about the pros, cons and costs of streaming platforms such as Amazon, Hulu and Netflix on Aug. 20 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair. Attendees will also learn about streaming media offered by the Library, including Freegal, Hoopla and OverDrive, which are free to Library cardholders. This class, to be held in the Computer Training Lab, requires experience using the keyboard, mouse and the Internet.
• Did you know that if you adopt a dog from Indianapolis Animal Care Services you can get free dog training? Connie Swaim has developed a training class for new adopters that helps new dog owners form healthy bonds with their new pets, and address existing issues. The first class will be held Aug. 22 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the shelter, 2600 S. Harding. You must register to attend the class, and have a dog adopted from IACS. • Lots of reports recently about car break-ins on the east side. Don’t leave valuables in the car! Please remember to lock your car doors every night, and report these crimes to police on the non-emergency number, 317-327-3811 or on your cell at 311. Police will step up patrols in areas getting hit hard.
• Managed Health Services (MHS) has partnered with Indy Reads, Circulation, and Lyft to support members with low literacy to encourage them to take reading classroom training. MHS is working with the ride-sharing services to help people get to free literacy programs given by Indy Reads. Visit mhsindiana.com to learn more about programs.
• In June, the NEAR Board of Directors voted to take the first steps to develop the city’s first community land trust (CLT). A community land trust develops and makes available homes for sale to households at/below 80 percent of the area median income (AMI). The goal will be to ensure a number of houses in redeveloping neighborhoods will be affordable to households with low to moderate incomes.
