INDIANAPOLIS — The first Friday of the month brings several open houses and special arts events throughout the city. This month’s First Friday will take place Aug. 3 from 6-9 p.m. at various venues.
At Indiana Landmarks’ Rapp Family Gallery, the August 3 First Friday art show presents “Goddess: Layered Visions,” an exploration and celebration of female energy presented by FLAVA FRESH! The show includes paintings, sculpture and mixed media works by more than 20 artists. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at the Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Ave. in Indianapolis. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds theaters and a reception hall in addition to the gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.
In partnership with Big Green the Harrison Center presents FoodCon 8. Since its inception in 2010, FoodCon has sought to shine a light on the art and culture of food in Indiana by gathering enthusiasts and experts in everything from aquaponics to urban homesteading. This year’s FoodCon is no exception and will feature 20 booths in the Harrison Center gym and courtyard, covering a broad range of interests including beekeeping, foraging, making kombucha, oil pulling and more. The Weekly View’s own correspondent Peter Kuhns will be setting up his hydroponics seed starter display. A variety of food trucks will be on site as well providing many dining options for event-goers. In Speck Gallery, Big Green presents “Real Food Grows Here,” where attendees can learn about the 32 Learning Gardens they have built and supported across Marion County since November, 2016. The Harrison Center is located at the corner of 16th and Delaware.
Circle City Industrial Complex, 1125 Brookside, offers several open studios. Five new artists will be making their debut at the Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9), representing the start of an expansion process that the artist co-operative will undertake beginning in the fall. Joining FC9 are Danielle Curry, Eve Eggleston, Molly Meier, Nicole Staab, and Steven VanDeVanter, representing a variety of art media. Also check out the Ruckus makerspaces on the north end.
