IRVINGTON — The Annual Irvington Historical Society Ice Cream Social will be held Aug. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. in front of the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, at the corner of Downey Ave. and University.
Since the early 60’s, the Irvington Historical Society has put on an Ice Cream Social which has raised funds for a variety of preservation projects. Currently, the social raises money to maintain the Bona Thompson Memorial Center and support its many exhibits.
Guests can enjoy Sundae’s Ice Cream (www.sundaeshomemade.com) that this year will include a milk free choice in Lemon Sorbet. Simply Divine Cupcakes in Irvington will supply cupcakes in a variety of flavors. Classic summer lunch food from Beach Bum BBQ rounds out the lunch menu. Tickets will be sold to exchange at food vendors. Food tickets can be purchased at a pre-event discount at squareup.com/store/IrvingtonHistoricalSociety/ or at the Social at a 1 =$1 rate. The street will be closed in front of the Bona and tables are set up under the beautiful old trees. Music is provided by The White River Jazz Band, featuring classic Dixieland style jazz.
There is a lot for kids to do at this family-friendly event — chalk art on the street, and the Black Hat Society will set up games geared for kids. Bring a blanket to sit on the grass to enjoy the music and cool treats.
This year, the popular vendors will be back, offering a nice selection of local merchants. In addition, there will be a tour of the Historic Mission Flats newly renovated units in the Missions building that is attached to the Bona. Core Redevelopment, a sponsor of this year’s Social, will open the doors to guests to see what they’ve created.
The museum in the Bona will be open throughout the Social. The exhibits include Wall Flowers, with the Irvington Garden Club; Passages: A Second Life in Greece; and 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts in Irvington. Plus, check out their permanent exhibits: The West Baden Angels, Old Irvington, and International Harvester.
