• District 5 Lawrence Township Advisory Board Member, and past president Ms. Emmajean Elizabeth Hines passed away on May 12 at the age of 84. Ms. Hines was elected to the Lawrence Township Advisory Board, and assumed office in January of 1997, and served on the board for more than 20 years. She was the first African American to be elected on the Lawrence Township Advisory Board, and was the first women to hold the office of President during her tenure on the board. Later, Ms. Hines played a pivotal role on the Advisory Board during the merger of the Lawrence Township Fire Department with the City of Indianapolis Fire Department. As President of the Advisory Board Ms. Hines was actively engaged with helping to remodel the Lawrence Township Government Building, and was influential with the acquisition and opening of the Lawrence Township Cupboard Food Pantry for families in need. Services were held May 23.
• The Indianapolis Hiking Club will explore the future of Pogue’s Run Trail June 5 at 9 a.m. with a hike from the western end to the halfway point. Meet in the parking lot on the southwest corner of Arsenal and 12th. On June 12 at 9 a.m., the group will meet at the Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park, 23rd and Dequincy for Part 2 of the exploration. • Everyone is invited out to meet East District police officers in an informal setting on May 30 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Starbucks at 2045 Shadeland Ave. for “Cops and Waters.” This is a great, casual meet-up over coffee and conversation.
• Sad to see that the Hoosier Academy Virtual School will close in June, putting many hard-working teachers and support staff on the unemployment line. The Hoosier Academy-Indianapolis and Insight Schools will continue in their current locations. The school’s headquarters is at 28th and Franklin Rd.
• ‘Tis the season for illegal dumping in our neighborhood. Please call the Mayor’s Action Center if you have had trash dumped in your alley. The number is 317-327-4622, or you can get assistance online at Request Indy via the Mayor’s Web page. If you catch someone dumping illegally, call 911 — it is a crime in progress!
