From The Indianapolis Star, Thursday, August 2: The drafting of men for the new national army begins in Indianapolis this morning at 8:00 a.m. when the first call of 282 local men appear for their physical test. Examinations will be conducted at School No. 3, 23 N. Rural and at the Newton Claypool Building, 144 N. Pennsylvania. Four physicians at each site will work until 10:00 p.m. to complete physicals on those allotted the first day. Examinations will also be conducted tomorrow and Saturday, and continue on Monday. Twice the number of men actually required for the local quota have been summoned in order to compensate for those who may not be physically qualified or deemed exempt. A large number of conscripts will ask for exemption and they will have to prove those claims to the local board for consideration.
