City’s High Weeds and Grass Program Marks Successes

INDIANAPOLIS — DCE started proactive sweeps in May in addition to responding to citizen reports submitted to the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC). After several weeks of proactive inspections in neighborhoods that have had the highest rate of weeds and grass violations, notice of violation letters were sent to property owners not in compliance with the City-County ordinance with vegetation of more than 12 inches in height.
As of the end of May, 8,364 high weeds and grass complaints had been reported by citizens with 3,161 properties investigated during the neighborhood sweeps period. Investigation of these properties resulted in 6,622 violations of which 1,849 properties were abated by City vendors.
Inspectors conduct approximately 197 investigations daily. DCE will continue to investigate and respond to complaints as they are reported with the season typically concluding in early fall.
Property owners who receive a notice of violation have five days from the date the notice is mailed to mow their overgrown property. If a property owner fails to mow the property, the City will send a mowing vendor to mow the property and will bill the property owner for the service at a rate of at least $363 per lot.
Residents may report a high weeds and grass violation by calling the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC) at 327-4622, by logging on to RequestIndy at www.indy.gov/requestindy or by using the RequestIndy Mobile Application.
