• IMPD Nuisance Abatement will be leading a cleanup project on the perimeter of the Sherman Park property (former RCA factory) through April 23. This project involves clearing the trash and brush along Sherman Dr. and Michigan St. Please note that the traffic flow on Sherman and Michigan may be restricted during this cleanup project. This project is open to community volunteers that would like to see this site improved. This cleanup will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The project will start at 10th St and Sherman Dr and proceed to Michigan St. Volunteers are instructed to park in the Sherman Park parking lot access near the bridge on Michigan St. Thurs. and Fri. The building near the bridge with graffiti, will be painted to cover the graffiti. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and bottled water, tools will be provided. • Indiana State Police recently recognized two heroes from the Indianapolis Post with Lifesaving Awards for their extraordinary efforts to save the life of another human being. Trooper Evan Joyner, on Sept. 3, 2015, saved a choking child. Trooper Luis Deffit, on January 28, 2016, applied life-saving CPR on a man in a single car crash. Thank you to both these first responders and their great work.
• Oaklandon Unitarian Universalist Church, 6450 Oaklandon Rd. will present “Nobody Needs to Know” on April 24 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. It is a 40 minute one act play about mental illness, stigma and recovery written by Carol Bozena. The readers theater setting is a self-help meeting for people who deal with mental health issues. There will be a Q & A with the actors follows the performance. • On April 28, Partnerships for Lawrence will host Toast the Arts at the Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave. There will be live music by Perry Scott, cellist from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The event will feature the Lawrence Parks Dept. Show Wagon, plus mural competition submissions (vote for your favorite with a $1 contribution). Refreshments will also be served. This a free, family-friendly event.
• Indiana Dept. of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to close the Hanna Ave. bridge over Interstate 65 on or after Mon., April 25 for a bridge construction project. A signed detour will direct Hanna Ave. traffic around construction and over I-65 via Keystone Ave., Raymond St. and Sherman Dr.
• Learn more about the history of the Bona Thompson at a new historic exhibit at the building, which is at the corner of Downey Ave. and University in Irvington. Originally the library for Butler University, it is now home to art space, the Irvington Historical Society, and much more. The exhibit runs through June 15. The Center is open Sundays 1-4 p.m., Wednesdays 1=3 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. Exhibits are free, but donations would be gratefully accepted.
