100 Years Ago This Week: Jan. 22-29

From The Indianapolis News, Saturday, January 22: The Mercantile Garage, 125-31 S. Pennsylvania Street is now open to motorists not only from Indianapolis, but for tourist or out-of-town motorists. With 18,000 square feet of floor space, the garage provides accessibility to both the city’s wholesale and shopping districts with easy access from South Pennsylvania Street and South Talbott Avenue. Probably the most attractive feature of this new enterprise is the checking system. When a car is driven in, time checks are given — one for the car and one for the owner. With the car check in his pocket, the owner’s mind will be at ease regarding his car. The Mercantile Garage makes a nominal charge of ten cents (2014: $2.14) per hour. In addition to storing commercial and pleasure cars, vehicles may be washed and light repairs performed.
