From The Indianapolis Star, Monday, November 8, 1915: Charles W. Fairbanks, formerly Vice President of the United States, addressed 1,503 men at the Y. M. C. A. “Big Meeting” yesterday at the English Theater on “The Great War.” He said the war costs about $50,000,000 (2014: $1,153,033,390.12) a day, and the warring nations are in debt to almost the breaking point. The belligerents have been obliged to search the money markets of the world for fresh financial support with which to carry on the war, and they have pledged their resources and their financial credit which will cripple them for generations to come. However, these countries are not alone the losers. “What has been destroyed is a part of the world’s capital, and non-belligerents are losers in a considerable degree,” Fairbanks asserted.
