Sports Musings On a September Morn

Irvington Prep Soccer

Congratulations to the Irvington Preparatory School Ravens soccer team.  According to my contact at the game, the Irving Prep Ravens carved out a hard-won 3-2 victory over the Southside Thunder at the Thunder’s home field in Greenwood on September 17. Playing superior defense, the Ravens held off a second half rally by the Thunder to claim the 3-2 victory. Congrats to Coach Garrett Uhlman and his Ravens team.

Indiana Fever

The Weekly View salutes the Indiana Fever for reaching the Eastern Conference finals in the WNBA with a 100 to 89 victory over the Chicago Sky. Led by Tamika Catchings with 27 points, the Fever were able to counter the 40 points scored by the Sky’s Elena Delle Donne. Tamika has already announced that 2015 will be her last season as an active player. How great would it be for her to retire with a WNBA championship ring on her finger?
Tickets for the East Division playoffs are on sale at the Fever box office.

Colts: We’re No. 1

According to a scientific survey conducted by Esquire Magazine, Colts fans are the most foul mouthed professional football fans in the United States. Counting the number of times fans of the various professional football teams dropped the F-bomb on Twitter, the Horseshoe followers led all team fans with a whopping 501 times using the F word in their tweets after the first weekend of the regular season. Makes ya proud ta be a Hoosier, don’t it? I wonder if they will conduct another survey after Monday night. I would be willing to wager that there will be a whole lot more than 501 F-bombs in the Twitter rantings of Colts fans this week after the sorry way the Horseshoe played against the Jets.

Coach Pagano on Andrew Luck after the Jets Game and His Job Security

The usually even-tempered and diplomatic Chuck Pagano let lose on his quarterback Andrew Luck in the post game press conference Monday night after losing to the Jets. “Luck had one of the worst games of his career against the Jets.” After being asked if he thought that Luck’s performance was due to a leaking offensive line, Pagano answered, “I don’t think so. Been the case for three years now, has it not? He should be more than comfortable dealing with it. We gotta get it fixed.”
Later, Pagano said about Luck’s four turnovers, “Make some great decisions, take care of the football. It’s not that hard. It’s not trigonometry.” Luck was a math major at Stanford.
Before the game Pagano referred to the rumors that he will be fired if he doesn’t produce a championship this year in an interview with ESPN. “This is my last job. And what my plans are. We win, and we’ll continue to do that. But when I took this thing, I said this is my last job. And when I said that I  meant it. I’m not going anywhere.”

Saturday in the Ring

The highlight of the Colts’ game Monday night was the official welcoming home of former Horseshoe center Jeff Saturday and his addition to the Colts Ring of Honor. Jeff was a key part of the Colts championship offense with Peyton Manning and he and Peyton had great chemistry. Saturday’s presence at the game only served to show how much the performance of the Colts offensive line has degenerated since his days of snapping the ball and calling the offensive line shots. Best of luck to Jeff Saturday in all his future endeavors.

Colt Injury Notes

Colts cornerback Vontae Davis suffered a concussion Monday against the Jets. Davis made the Pro Bowl last year and is widely regarded to be the Horseshoe’s best defensive player. No word on how long he might be out of action.
Tight end Dwayne Allen suffered an ankle injury and left the game. No word yet of the extent of the injury. Allen is in his last contract year and while he has shown flashes of true ability, he has had a problem staying healthy. He missed all of the 2013 season with an injury.
