• A big thank you to the gentleman who keeps the corner of Franklin and 16th St. so tidy. He’s out there in the mornings and evening, and does a great job. Your efforts are noticed and appreciated by everyone who drives through there.
• Beech Grove will hold a budget hearing on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at 7 p.m. at Beech Grove City Hall, 802 Main St. This is a public hearing about the 2016 budget. For particulars, visit www.beechgrove.com and search for Taxpayer Notice.
• The TURN Festival will be held Sept. 12 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Paramount School Farm & Brookside Park. This Transforming Urban Neighborhoods event is a free one-day educational event presented by Paramount School in partnership with Community Health Network. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Drew Ramsey, a leading proponent of food as medicine and author of The Happiness Diet, will be speaking at 9 a.m. Come on out and enjoy the music of the Bonesetters, Bigfoot Yancey, and the Ultraviolet Blues Band.

• Very sad to see the eastside Habig’s Garden Shop close. They have been a great business, and very supportive of the community. They will be closing their doors at 11th and Arlington by the end of the month. Please stop by and wish everyone well.
• It is hard to believe fall is just around the corner (September 23, to be precise). Leaves are beginning to turn already and drop from the trees. If possible, please keep lots of leaves from blowing and clogging up storm sewer inlets. Given this year’s problems with gullywashing rains that lead to flooded streets and basements, let’s try to keep the water flowing in the right direction!
• A Perry Township freshman is being honored as one of only ten students in the country to win the prestigious Arthur Ashe Essay award. Southport High School freshman Colston Streit was featured Thursday August 27th on WRTV 6 News with reporter Lauren Casey who interviewed Colston at the High School. Congratulations, Colston, on this big honor!
• The Indianapolis Chapter of Indiana Black Expo (ICIBE), in partnership with Flanner and Buchanan and the Indy Youth Sports League, recently announced an Indianapolis Public Schools Student as recipient of the Athlete of the Week program. Moniqueka Lee, an upperclassmen from Arlington High School, was chosen as that week’s featured Female Athlete. She received a recognition trophy, invitation to the a fall sports reception, and a dinner certificate to a local restaurant.
