World War I 100 Years Ago: Sept. 4-11

From The Indianapolis News, Tuesday, September 7, 1915: Booming cannon, the peppery flash of machine guns, the incessant crackle of rifles, the whir of an aeroplane, the ascent of an observation balloon, and the cheering of 20,000 people provided plenty of thrills at the Speedway yesterday when the “War in Indiana” closed an admirable military spectacle, staged by the Indianapolis Armory Association to benefit the armory fund. The battle followed a parade of military forces more than two miles in length and maneuvers participated in by Troop B, 5th U. S. Cavalry, the Culver Black Horse Troop, and other units. The great cavalry charge across the field at the close of the battle was a fitting climax admired by everybody. The 2,000 Indiana National Guard soldiers and soldiers of visiting organizations carried out the maneuvers expending 350,000 rounds of ammunition.
