From The Indianapolis Star, Saturday, August 7, 1915: The large lot at Layman Av. and Washington St. assumed the appearance of an immense Japanese garden last night with gayly decorated booths, stands and tents lighted by innumerable Japanese lanterns. The Star Summer Mission Fund officers shivered yesterday as they watched the wintery weather and showers wondering if the Irvington lawn fete would be postponed. Mrs. W. H. Zaiser, and her assistants had no such notion and proceeded with preparations. Irvington citizens did not fear the weather either; they filled the grounds and attacked huge dishes of ice cream and large stacks of home-made candy made by the Camp Fire Girls of Irvington seemed to melt away. The tents of fortune tellers and the minstrel show were not large enough to accommodate their many patrons. The fete was voted a success.
