INDIANAPOLIS — The 2nd annual running of the Monumental Mile took place June 4 on Monument Circle to record setting results.
The final two (of nine) races of the evening saw records fall in both the Men’s and Women’s Elite Race Divisions. The Men’s mile was won by defending champion Frezer Legesse in 4:03.6, edging under his own course record of 4:03.8. Legesse lives and trains in Bloomington, Indiana. American record holder and IU grad Molly Ludlow won the highly competitive Elite Women’s division in 4:32.3, shattering the course record of 4:43.8 set by Liudmila Stepnova last year. Ludlow is a central Indiana resident and used the Monumental Mile as a part of her build up to the USA Olympic Trails next year.
The biggest winner of the evening was local public education. The IMM made donations totaling $140,000, their largest yearly donation to date. Organizations receiving donations were: IPS Education Foundation ($110,000), Simon Youth Foundation ($25,000), and Teachers’ Treasures ($5,000).
