From The Indianapolis News, Saturday, February 13, 1915: Indianapolis school children did not participate in the collection yesterday of money to be turned over to the Red Cross for use in relief work in Europe. All other schools in the state did respond to a circular issued by Charles A. Greathouse, state superintendent of public instruction, urging that Lincoln’s birthday be commemorated by each pupil giving one penny to be used for the charitable purposes in Europe. More than $3,000 (2013: $68,092.52) has been received. The Indianapolis school board decided not to take up the collection in the city schools because so many people in the city were in need of help and that so many persons were out of work it would be inappropriate for the children to be asked to contribute.
