• The hearing about the 1008 N. Emerson zoning variances will be held Feb. 10 from 1-4 p.m. at the City-County Building, The project is still very much up in the air, with the latest news suggesting the petitioner of the property has redrawn plans and a variance will not be needed to put in a gas station. Still, neighbors and interested parties are being asked to show up to lend support to the neighborhood.
• After an extremely long meeting of the Indianapolis Metropolitan and Economic Development Committee meeting on Jan. 25, the committee voted to postpone further discussion of the proposed billboard change ordinance (Proposal 250) until April. The proposal would have allowed digital billboards to replace existing static billboards throughout Marion County, including neighborhoods. Over 30 neighborhood organizations came out to oppose the proposal.
• Encore Vocal Arts will present Mozart’s Requiem on Feb. 21, presenting in as a masquerade ball. The audience is invited to come dressed in black and wear masquerade masks as costumed musicians perform by candlelight and dancers from Dance Kaleidoscope interpret the journey of the soul’s passing. Encore will be performing the contemporary completion of the Requiem (Mozart died before finishing it). The pre-party begins at 7 p.m. at Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave. Cost is $18 or $15 for students. • Community Health Network is offering free cholesterol/glucose screenings from 9 a.m.-noon on various days throughout 2015. The next ones will be at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital (8075 N. Shadeland) Feb. 10, and Community Hospital East (1500 N. Ritter) on Feb. 24. Arrive by 11:30 a.m. to secure a screening opportunity. The screenings end at noon. Fasting for 10 hours is recommended for best Total Profile results. Please be sure to take all necessary medication and drink 8-16 ounces of water prior to the screening.

• Award-winning journalist Gustav Niebuhr will discuss religious intolerance and stereotyping in a Feb. 10 lecture at the University of Indianapolis. His presentation, “Beyond Tolerance: Combating Religious (and Other) Stereotyping in a Dangerous Time,” will begin at 4:30 p.m. in McCleary Chapel of UIndy’s Schwitzer Student Center, 1400 E. Hanna Ave. Responding to his remarks will be Julie A. Belz, associate professor of Applied Linguistics, English, and World Language and Cultures at IUPUI.
