• Thank you Lisa Tudor and the good folks at Indy Feral, who came out and helped us trap, spay/neuter, and release nine kitties in our little colony here at the office. We still have a few more who have eluded the traps, but we’re sure they will come around with patience (and tuna). As always, we welcome cash donations to feed and shelter the cats year round.
• Irvington United Methodist Church will have a live nativity at the church at 30 N. Audubon Rd. during the Irvington Holiday Open House. The Nativity will feature Dickens Carolers to set the mood with carols. This is a drive-through outdoor re-enactment, and is a lovely tradition for the whole family.
• Tinsel Town on 10 East will be held Dec. 5 from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Hit East 10th St. from Clifford Corners from Jefferson to LaSalle streets — there are a lot of neat local shops all along the street.
• The Franklin Township Historical Society will be holding an old Fashioned Christmas on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Meeting House at 6510 S. Franklin Rd. There will be a carol sing-along, a visit from Santa, and much more. Check it out for a taste of the true spirit of the season.
• Cumberland will be hopping on Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the 4th Annual Weihnachtsmarkt. The day culminates in a concert on the porch at the Wayburn Pocket Park at 5:30 p.m. followed by Santa’s arrival at the Tree Lighting ceremony at promptly at 6 p.m. The market and activities, including pictures with Santa, will take place along East Washington from Munsie to Starter. This is a lovely event for kids and adults alike, reminding everyone of the German Christkindlmarkts.
• The holiday season brings out the best in humanity, and unfortunately, the worst. There have been a rash of car break-ins in and around Irvington and the east side. The thieves are looking for valuables, change left in compartments, CDs, etc. from cars parked along the streets and in driveways. Consider this a friendly reminder to take all valuables out of your car and lock the doors, and set the alarm on your car (if you have one) every time you leave your car unattended. If you see suspicious activity (people looking in cars, walking back and forth “casing” the street, etc.), please call 9-1-1. If we all stay alert, we might be able to catch the thieves.
• Speaking of IMPD, East District Officer Sarah Romeril went above and beyond the call of duty recently to help a single mom out. She responded to a call of a theft — a sick little girl’s piggy bank was stolen by her brother to buy drugs — and the mother filed a report. Officer Romeril was touched by their story, and collected donations from her co-workers and gave the victim a stuffed animal and a gift card for the amount that was stolen, and more. They are seeking more donations to help the family, which can be sent to IMPD East District, 201 N. Shadeland Ave., Indianapolis IN 46219, in care of Officer Romeril.
