• Long-time Irvington resident Isabel, wife of former Halloween Festival director Seth Brooks, passed away Sept. 30. The organizers of the Pleasant Run Run have decided to dedicate this year’s run to her, with proceeds donated to a cancer charity of his choice.
• Distelrath Farms will be hosting a cornhole tournament fundraiser on Oct. 11 from 5-8 p.m. at the farm, 6302 E. Raymond St. All proceeds will benefit the creation of the Academy at Distelrath Farms, a reality-based learning agricultural school. Cost is $25 per person or $50 a team. First place team receives a private party 20 person hog roast on the farm ($500 value), second receives a custom cornhole game set or a Spotts Garden Service consultation ($150 value), and third receives a Distelrath Farms meat and produce sampler ($50 value). • The Cottage Home Neighborhood is having a block party, which means everyone is invited! The theme is “Beneath the Mystic Moon” and it will be held Oct. 11 from 5-11 p.m. in the 700 block of Dorman St. There will be food trucks, games, beer, wine, retail booths, live music on two stages, kid’s activities, killer games like lawn twister and jumbo ker-plunk, and lots of neighborly fun.
• The Hancock Regional Hospital Guild will host a book fair on Oct. 14 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the lower lobby of the hospital. All proceeds will be used to benefit the hospital. The hospital is located at 801 N. State St. in Greenfield.
• There will be an Arbor Day tree planting at the Peace and Nature Garden on the grounds of the Benedict Inn on Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. The flower planting will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and volunteers are welcome.
• The Read Local Authors Series at the Irvington Branch Library, 5325 E. Washington St., will kick off Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. with Jonathan Eller, Director of the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies at IUPUI. On Nov. 4, Dan Wakefield will be on hand, Nov. 18 Robert L. Snow and Forrest Bowman, Jr., and Nov. 25 David Hoppe will be at the library to talk about their books.
• 2014 Hometown Roots Concert Series will conclude with an afternoon of jazz on Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m. It will feature a performance of selections from the American Songbook along with jazz standards by The Bruce Polson Quartet with saxophonist Rich Cohen. Then, contemporary jazz vocalist Cynthia Layne will perform with her band a mix of groove-based R&B with strong jazz undertones. Performances will be at Central Library in the Clowes Auditorium, 40 E. St. Clair Street.
• The final Irvington Farmer’s Market will be held Oct. 12 from noon-3 p.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. Pick up your pumpkins there, as well as fresh produce, baked goods, meats, cheeses, and other local delicacies. There are also lots of booths with locally made arts and crafts that are perfect for gift giving. It’s only a couple of months to Christmas!
