INDIANAPOLIS — Dayton, Ohio artist James Pate will discuss his powerful and thought provoking Central Library exhibit, “Kin Killin’ Kin,” during a free public presentation on Sept. 20 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at Central Library in the Clowes Auditorium, 40 E. St. Clair Street.
As part of the Library’s “Stand4Peace” initiative presented by its African-American History Committee, the artist will share his motivation behind the series of 13 charcoal images on display in Central Library’s South Display Hall through Sept. 28 that serves as a call-to-action against gun violence in the African-American community. The exhibit, which includes a memorial to local crime victims and an invitation for individuals to sign a Declaration for Peace, has served as a catalyst for community leaders and local youth to engage in dialogue to find solutions to the epidemic of black homicide. In the first month of the exhibit’s opening, an estimated 3,000 people have viewed the exhibit, including numerous youth groups who have participated in special activities as part of their exhibit tours. Mayor Greg Ballard and IMPD Chief Rick Hite are among thousands who have signed the Declaration for Peace.
