IRT Opens with Two Gentlemen of Verona

INDIANAPOLIS — This year marks the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birthday. The Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) is celebrating the occasion by opening its 43rd season with The Two Gentlemen of Verona, written by William Shakespeare, believed to be one of his earliest plays. According to Janet Allen, CEO & Artistic Director for the IRT, she was “entranced and enthralled” by director Tim Odell’s production of the play. “It was deep, painful, really funny — it was about real things, real friendships, first loves and first heartbreaks.”
The Two Gentlemen of Verona tells the story of two devoted friends, Valentine and Proteus – the best of friends, that is, until they discover they are in love with the same woman. Proteus falls in love with Valentine’s true love — Silvia. Forsaking his first love, Julia, Proteus sets out to betray his unsuspecting friend, only to find that both Silvia and Julia have a thing or two to teach him about loyalty and love. Throw in a circus of outlaws, a cross-dressing heroine, and a dog-loving clown for a romantic comedy that promises to entertain IRT audiences.
Performances continue through Oct. 19 at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, OneAmerica Stage, 140 W. Washington St. Tickets range from $20-55, based on time and day. For tickets call 317-635-5252 or visit www.irtlive.com.
