INDIANAPOLIS — On May 10, the Sims Boxing Gym (SBG) will hold its grand opening, Situated at 4615 E. 10th St. just across from the Emerson Theater, it will be Anthony Sims, Jr. hangout as he prepares for his second pro bout on May 29 in Cincinnati. The gym will be open for registration of boys and girls, ages 8-18, for young men and women, and for seniors. The immediate goal is to develop boxers for the Silver Gloves, Golden Gloves, and Junior Olympics programs. Sims wants to develop Indiana’s amateur talent with SBG boxers winning the state Golden Gloves tournament next March, and in 5 years the Indiana team winning the national championship.
Sims just completed his first year of college, majoring in business management at Indiana State University, giving up his amateur status after 188 bouts. Two years ago, he became the youngest medalist in the history of USA Boxing’s light-heavyweight division, winning bronze in the 2012 Olympic trials. He had his first pro fight last month, winning with a unanimous decision over James Guy. He is 19 and his aim is to be number one heavyweight in the world. His father, Anthony Sims, Sr., was an outstanding boxer and an alternate on the 1980 Olympics team, but did not compete due to the U.S. boycott of the Olympics that year. His father passed away in an auto accident in 2001. His uncle is Floyd Mayweather, recognized as the number one boxer in the world today.
Several boxing dignitaries will be on hand for Saturday’s grand opening from 1-5 p.m.
