INDIANAPOLIS — Congratulations to the Walker Career Center Nanoline Team for taking 1st place and being named National Champions in the Phoenix Contact Nanoline competition. The event took place at the Phoenix Contact’s USA headquarters located in Middletown, Pennsylvania on Feb. 15. The team competed against five remaining teams, including two from Benton Central located in Indiana. Walker Career Center also took home the Excellence Award for Communication-Marketing/Sales. The team, along with sponsor, Jim Hanson, will be busy over the next month preparing for their trip to Germany!
Their project was kept at the Phoenix Headquarters and will remain on display to help celebrate National Engineering Week. It will then be shipped to Germany to display at the Hannover Fair TectoYou booth which starts April 7.
The Walker Nanoline Team utilized their knowledge learned from Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Pre-Engineering courses which combines science, technology, engineering and mathematics along with rigor to prepare students for a career in one of the many STEM fields. Their project RoboDose, an automated pill dispensary, tested their knowledge and understanding of engineering and design and its application to a real world problem. This resulted in the development of an award winning product.
The team included 4 juniors and 1 senior. Team members are Brian Wyatt, Emma Griffith, Jaidy Hernandez, Jon Owens and Portia Jefferson. Mr. Jim Hanson, a PLTW CIM master teacher is the sponsor.
Junior, Jon Owens, stated that when the team was asked to stay on the stage after being named the Excellence in Communication winner, he became excited, because the overall winner was going to be named next. Emma Griffith, also a senior, said she was most nervous about winning and that being able to go to Germany is “amazing.”
