INDIANAPOLIS — Sheriff John Layton invited a select group of female Jail inmates to help decorate the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. It is the second year for this holiday tradition.
“Decorating a Christmas tree means so much to the female inmates who are selected to participate. A majority of our female inmates are mothers, and we want to instill the meaning of the holiday spirit — the spirit of giving, of compassion, of love — inside the walls of our Jail, so better choices can be made upon their release,” said Sheriff Layton.
The five inmates sang Christmas songs while decorating, hanging bows and ornaments, and placing gifts and teddy bears under the tree. The gifts and teddy bears will be given to children in need, and to the children who visit the Marion County Jail.
Hundreds of teddy bears are donated each year to public safety agencies by the Indiana Bar Association’s Paralegal Committee.
