Congratulations to the Warren Central Warriors for winning yet another state title. Warren used its strong defense and a 3rd quarter touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jeff George to senior wideout Zach Gegner to defeat the Carmel Greyhounds 7-6 at Lucas Oil Stadium last Saturday night, Nov. 30th to take the inaugurate Class 6-A state title. This victory avenged a 21-15 defeat at the hands of the Greyhounds during the regular season. The Greyhounds registered more total offense than the Warriors, but were only able to score two field goals for their trouble. Some key turnovers may have cost Carmel the victory.
Warren took an 11-3 regular season record into the playoffs although they were 4-3 in conference play which was good for 4th place in the Metropolitan Conference standings. Carmel was third in the Metro Conference with a 5-2 and were 10-4 for the season. Center Grove and Ben Davis tied for the conference lead with identical 6-1 marks. Center Grove turned in an impressive 11-2 mark for the season.
This was the first season for Class 6-A. It is composed of the 32 largest high schools in the state; 18 of those schools are in Central Indiana. It would appear that the Class will be a more equitable division of power among the biggest schools and based on its first season of competition it looks to be a success. The Weekly View salutes coach Jayson West and his Warren Central warriors on another outstanding season capped by another state championship.
