Applause!: Nov. 15-23

• Eastsider Roxanna Caldwell, the station manager at WFYI Public Radio, was recently named one of “Indy’s Best and Brightest 2013.” The honor is from Junior Achievement, recognizing professionals 40 and under for making their mark in the community. Congratulations Roxanna!
• Geneva Hair Studio had a grand opening on Nov. 11 to celebrate its move to a new space at 5541 E. Washington St. Bennie Pollard, a well-known stylist and owner of Benniefactor and Gage for Men, was on hand with demonstrations of current hairstyles.
• Progress is beginning on the Rivoli Theatre, 3155 E. 10th St. Thanks to a loan from Indiana Landmarks, work has begun on a new roof over the stage and auditorium parts of the building. It’s hoped that a new roof will prevent further deterioration of the building, which has been vacant since 1992. The restoration of the  Rivoli, built in 1927, is a key part of the development of East 10th St.
• The Near Eastside Community Organization is having a Near Eastside Neighborhood Summit on Dec. 12 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 5009 E. 21st St. There will be reports from task forces, and discussions of successes and the quality of life plan. All are welcome to attend.
• The Weekly View has been a supporter of Gaia Works Christmas Toy Drive for the past 4 years. If you would like to help us gather toys for Coburn Place, a domestic abuse Safe Haven, please drop off your donations at our office 195 N. Shortridge Road, Suite D, Indpls. IN 46219 from 9am to 5pm, Mon. – Fri. We are in need of small toys for stockings and hats & gloves.
• The typhoon that hit the Philippines may have killed 10,000 people, and an untold number are homeless, injured and hungry. There are many worthy organizations out there trying to get help to the victims of the largest storm ever recorded, and they are taking donations. One organization is the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which is a volunteer organization trying to get help there immediately. Visit www.ifrc.org/ and donate online if you can afford it.
•  Catherine Griffith is the new pastor of Irvington Friends Meeting, 831 N. Edmondson. She moved to the area from Richmond,  Ind., where she taught in the religion department at Earlham College. Previously, she was the pastor at West Newton and Valley Mills Friends in southwest Indianapolis, and she has been a recorded Friends minister since 1991. Welcome to the community!
• There will be a Lawrence Common Council Meeting on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the City Assembly Rooms, 9001 E. 59th St. The public is encouraged to attend this public meeting.
• The City of Greenfield will be holding the 8th Annual 40,000 Pounds of Giving food drive on Dec. 7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Kroger in Greenfield, 1527 N. State St. The goal is to fill a 53 foot trailer and pack the pantries in Hancock County. Donations will benefit homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and food pantries throughout the area.
