• Banned Book Week is Sept. 22-28. This is a week when we draw attention to the problem of censorship, especially in libraries. Many books now regarded as classics were once considered controversial, including To Kill a Mockingbird, The Scarlet Letter, Leaves of Grass, The Great Gatsby, and In Cold Blood.
• The Miss Irvington Scholarship Program will be held on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Downey Ave. Christian Church at 111 S. Downey.
• Super excited about Al Hunter’s 2013 Irvington Ghost Tours which will begin next Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in front of Bookmamas, 9 S. Johnson and will continue on until Nov. 2. For only $15 per person (cash only), you’ll get one of the most interesting walking tours of a fascinating (and ghost-filled) neighborhood you can take. You’ll also get a button, and a copy of one of Al’s books. He donates the profits of these tours to local charities. Show up at least 20 minutes before the tour to purchase tickets. For those of you who’ve called us to ask about pre-sale tickets, they aren’t available — tickets can be purchased just before the tour at Bookmamas or the Magick Candle on S. Audubon.
• The Herb Society of Central Indiana will present an interesting program at 6:45 p.m. on October 7th at the John Hensel Gov. Center, 10701 N. College Ave. answering all your questions about herbs. There will also be a panel of our experts to answer your herb questions, and hands-on take away projects. Everyone is welcome. • The Phoenix Theatre has announced that Tom Horan has been named Playwright in Residence for 2013-14. Horan is a sound designer and Co-Artistic Director of the Austin, Texas collective The Duplicates. He’ll be living in Indy during his residency.
