IRVINGTON — The Irvington Benton House Tour of Homes on Sunday, September 15 will showcase the history, charm, and architecture of Irvington neighborhoods while inspiring and educating visitors. Celebrate 40 years of outstanding home tours by touring an array of stunning historic homes in vibrant Irvington. Guests can enjoy viewing the properties of homeowners who reflect the eclectic and creative atmosphere of Irvington. Many of the homeowners not only live in Irvington, but invest further in the development of the 143 year old community through business and volunteer connections.
The Irvington Historic Landmarks Foundation and Benton House Association are happy to announce that the home tour will feature some of the finest homes and properties in Irvington. The photos featured here are of a home on the prestigious, tree-lined lover’s lane — Audubon Road off Pleasant Run Parkway near 10th St. After entering “Audubon Hall” from the enormous front porch that overlooks a sweeping lawn and garden, enjoy the large music room, hand painted murals, stained glass, and other elegant features you will only find in this stunning home. “Audubon Hall” is decorated with spectacular artwork and antiques throughout, two pianos in the music room, and stained glass. Recent work on the home includes a revamped entryway and repainting.
Another beautiful home is a ranch with a three room conversion into a dream kitchen. Recent bathroom renovations, and a finished full basement will be on view. Also enjoy the movie theater, billiards room, and many other surprises in this over 3,000 square foot home. Showcased in the Irvington Terrace area is a charming Tudor with unique architecture, original details, and beautiful front and back gardens. Also on view will be a chic bungalow where budget and hip design style play a central role in creating an inspired home.
On Pleasant Run Parkway, tucked away behind the trees is an enchanting Irvington jewel you will not want to miss. From the homeowner’s parlor room, visitors can experience a view of the west, east, south and north simultaneously. In addition, a unit in the highly anticipated, newly constructed Irvington Lofts on East Washington St. will be on view for visitors. Tour the historic Bona Thompson Center and Benton House — two of the cornerstones of the historic Irvington neighborhood.
As a thank you for 40 years of successful home tours, organizers have packed the 2013 tour with additional bonus spots throughout Irvington including a tour/hog roast celebration at the Downey Avenue Christian Church. In addition, Hope Counseling Ministry (831 N. Edmondson) is sponsoring a photography exhibit of Charles Oberting’s artwork at the Downey Avenue Church during the Home Tour. He is a non-verbal Irvington art photographer who communicates through his innovative work. During the home tour, pick up a complimentary cupcake and enjoy jazz music and festivities on the lawn of the Benton House. There will be unique displays on the history of the last 40 years of the home tour.
The home tour is the largest fundraising event for the historic Benton House, and proceeds go toward the preservation of the 140 year old landmark. What started 40 years ago as a group of eager neighbors opening their homes for others to tour and share ideas has now turned into the longest consecutively run home tour in the city of Indianapolis showcasing nearly 200 homes and landmarks.
The 2013 self guided Irvington Tour of Homes starts at noon and continues until 5:00 p.m. on September 15. Biking and walking is encouraged. Tickets are $12 advance, $15 the day of the tour.
