• The award-winning White River Sound Chorus is looking for women who love to sing and entertain while making new friends. • The garage behind the Horner House on South Emerson burned down on Sept. 6. Fortunately, no one injured, and the historic home was untouched. Work continues to stabilize and restore the home.
• At the last Irvington Farmer’s Market, City-County Councillors Mary Moriarty Adams and Ben Hunter joined forces to present information about the plans for a new family center at Ellenberger Park. Preliminary drawings are available for view, which came from public discussions that took place a couple of years ago. Plans call for meeting rooms, an inside walking/running track, more parking, and a lot of great amenities. The east side is worthy of this kind of investment from the city, and public-private partnerships.
• Community Shred Day is Sept. 14 at Warren Central H.S., 9500 E. 16th St. from 9 a.m.-noon. This is a chance to get rid of receipts, checkbooks and sensitive documents as well as computers, TVs, stereos, refrigerators and other household appliances.
• On Sept. 9, Public Safety Director Troy Riggs ordered all employees at the Regional Operations Center in the former Eastgate Mall to leave due to safety concerns. The center was built to coordinate emergency plans between various agencies and was opened just before the Indianapolis Super Bowl in 2012. Concerns about inadequate fire walls and sprinkler systems led to the evacuation, East District officers will move to the Police Academy at 10th and Post Road. Riggs said the facility will be closed until repairs are made.
• The 175th Anniversary of Old Bethel United Methodist Church, 7995 E. 21st St., will be held Sept. 13-15 and is open to the public. There will be a speaking engagement by Bishop Mike Coyner (leader of the Methodist Church in Indiana), a cookout, a concert with Charles Manning of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and a morning service.
