INDIANAPOLIS — Children ages 4-14 are invited to participate in the Eagle Creek Park Foundation’s 12th annual Kids Fishing Derby from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 1 at Eagle Creek Park.
Space is available for 400 kids to fish license-free at the park’s coffer dam, located at the first right south of the 71st Street gate, all at no cost.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources designates June 1 as a free fishing day, which means Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish Indiana’s public waters.
The foundation provides lunch with hot dogs, chips and drinks for all participants. The Pacers Fan Van will provide entertainment and prizes from 8-10 a.m., and local mascots will make appearances as well. Live bait is provided. Participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment, although a limited amount of fishing poles will be available for use if children cannot supply their own.
All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers will be available to help bait and hook, and demonstrate casting techniques.
Pre-registration is required by Thursday, May 30 at 5 p.m., and space is limited to the first 400 participants. The $5 park admission fee is waived for pre-registered participants.
Entry forms are available at the Eagle Creek Park office, 7840 W. 56th St., or online at www.eaglecreekpark.org. The rain date is set for Sunday, June 2, also a free fishing day.
