• Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmas, aunties, and other ladies out there who shaped our lives. One day a year isn’t enough to express our appreciation for all the love and commitment you put into the difficult job of nurturing youth.
• East side residents will be delighted to know that Shortridge Rd. (also known as Bone Rattler Drive), will be repaved soon. In addition, they will be adding bike lanes. When you come to the Weekly View offices to place your garage sale ads (hint, hint), be aware that lanes will be closed and there will be some inconvenience for the next couple of months.
• Supporters of the arts packed the Lawrence City Council meeting for a great presentation on May 6 from Partnerships for Lawrence. Congratulations on making a positive impact in the community.
• On May 15, Irvington Presbyterian will have an interesting discussion on the new healthcare law and its impact on Medicare at 6 p.m. The church is at 55 Johnson Ave.
• Gear up for another volunteer opportunity to clean up Fall Creek at Fort Harrison State Park on June 1 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come help clean up the banks of Fall Creek (not recommended for small children or pets). • Tony Wooten, a student at Franklin Township Middle School East created a memorial to honor fallen police officers. Also, Tony, an Eagle Scout, created a display recognizing East District officers of the month. The memorial was dedicated May 8 at IMPD East District headquarters, 201 N. Shadeland. Tony is the son of an IMPD officer, and he is the first Eagle Scout in his family.
• The Second Annual Chalk Art Festival and Competition will get underway at the Garfield Park Arts Center on May 11 at 10 a.m. There will be live music, food, and prizes — and hopefully no rain! Bring your own chalk or buy a kit for $3. Free registration between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and work must be completed by 3 p.m., when judging begins. There are teen and adult categories, plus families are encouraged to compete as a team. Call 327-7135 for more information.
• Next Friday, May 17 is Bike to Work Day. There will be special activities for downtown commuters who use the Bike Hub at City Market, with booths, breakfasts, and sponsor booths. Hours are 6 a.m.-6:30 p.m. This would be a great time to try out those bike lanes along the major corridors into downtown. (And drivers, be aware that there will be more bikes on the road.)
