Last Saturday morning April 14th, 20 of my neighbors, gathered at Patricia and Joe’s beautiful home for a quick bite of homemade egg McMuffins, rolls, donuts, coffee and juice. We all live in the first 3 blocks south of Washington Street on Butler, Julian or Hawthorne Ln. in Irvington. We were part of an eastside cleanup group organized by Paula Schmidt and Patricia Waters and sponsored by KIB (Keep Indianapolis Beautiful). We broke up into teams and hit the streets, with rakes, shovels and trash bags in hand. My teammate Debbie Cooper and I found some unusual things in the gutters: a pink garter, leopard print bow, legos, tiny super balls, a squirrel carcass, a bug set in acrylic (someone’s bug collection) and 61¢. After several hours of bending and picking up (my back is still sore) we met back at Carrie Schmidt’s cute house for a tasty lunch of hot dogs, beans, chips and iced tea.
The neighbors ranged in age from 5 weeks old to well over 70. We had a great time and look forward to next time.
