The first edition of the Eastside Voice rolled off the presses on March 13, 2009. Four years later, here we are with a new name — the Weekly View — a snazzy new Web site, http://weeklyview.net, and thousands of new readers every week.
When the four of us started up the newspaper, we knew there was a big demand for a newspaper that told positive stories about the community. We also knew that there were a lot of businesses that needed a good quality publication to advertise in. We were determined to give readers what they wanted — something to read that was enlightening and uplifting — and also provide a place for businesses to advertise at affordable rates and with great customer service.
Starting a business in the middle of the Great Recession was a little bit nuts. Starting a newspaper when everyone was saying that the newspaper industry was dying was really nuts. We had faith, though, that readers would welcome an actual newspaper they could hold in their hands. Despite all the wonders of the digital age, there is still something very satisfying about unfolding an actual paper, doing the crossword puzzle (in ink!), and cutting out favorite comics to put on the fridge.
As an advertiser-supported free community newspaper, we know that local businesses are the economic backbone of our neighborhoods. We give our advertisers the most bang for the buck as we can — and because all four of us live around here, we shop, eat, and support our local businesses. Our profits don’t go to some out-of-state corporate bigwig with golden parachutes, they are spent here in the neighborhood.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us achieve our 4th Anniversary — our readers, writers, contributors, advertisers, carriers, and our family and friends who have kept us (relatively) sane throughout the years. Here’s to many, many more years of the Weekly View!
