Summer Service Food Program Needs Support

INDIANAPOLIS — With the help of 245 sponsoring agencies in 2012, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provided over 3.1 million free meals and snacks to low-income Hoosier children. Despite the progress, many Indiana youngsters continue to face a daily struggle with hunger.
The Indiana Department of Education is seeking qualified organizations to sponsor the SFSP in the underserved areas of the state, including 11 Indiana counties where additional sites are needed. The SFSP feeds low-income children in the summer months when school is not in session.
The Indiana Department of Education will host training workshops for sponsors in Indianapolis and around the state. To attend a workshop, please contact Marcia Yurczyk or Tina Skinner at the Indiana Department of Education at (317) 232-6610 or by e-mail at myurczyk@doe.in.gov or tskinner@doe.in.gov. The application deadline to become a SFSP sponsor is April 30, 2013.

GO Ahead & Play Project

INDIANAPOLIS — Women’s Fund of Central Indiana recently announced an invitation for artists to participate in their student-led GO Ahead & Play community project. The organization welcomes online submissions from local artists interested in bringing pop-up pianos to life, which will then be displayed throughout the central Indiana in August. Submission entries are due by noon on Thursday, February 28.
Women’s Fund invites applications from local artists who would like to participate in the project by re-envisioning a working piano through their art. This project is open to individual artists and groups of artists of all ages. Artists will be selected and notified by March 31. Deadline for project completion is June 30. The exhibit is expected to take place in August.
Women’s Fund’s GO Ahead & Play project is designed to bring music to public spaces, arts areas and Women’s Fund grantee organizations, for people who would not normally be exposed to the arts. It is designed to engage youth in a philanthropic process and use their talents and leadership to bring art and music to central Indiana for the benefit of the community and organizations serving women and girls.

Chamber of Commerce Newsletters Added to Digital Collection

INDIANAPOLIS — An intriguing glimpse into the history of Indianapolis as documented in newsletters of the Chamber of Commerce is available in a newly-added digital collection of The Indianapolis Public Library found at www.indypl.org.
The collection contains thousands of images from Chamber newsletters during the years 1921 – 1942 which focused on interests of the Chamber that extended far beyond the business community. Although the primary focus was local business, the Chamber actively promoted the arts and campaigned for urban beautification, road improvement, fire prevention, and a hospital for veterans. It even championed the role of women in business and community life.
The newsletters, titled “Activities of the Chamber of Commerce” and “The Bulletin,” include such images as Marmon and Stutz automobiles, Bush Stadium (known then as Perry Stadium), Union Station, the Indiana War Memorial Plaza, and the Indianapolis 500 race, among many others. Viewers also will find articles contributed by such Indianapolis authors as Booth Tarkington and Meredith Nicholson, as well as advertisements for Hoosier favorites Velvet Ice Cream, Haag’s Drugs, Prest-O-Lite, Taggart Baking Company, and Kingan’s Reliable Meats. Visitors to the Indy Library site can click on individual images to view their contents, or search for topical information by selecting from the categories of automobiles, buildings, clubs, culture, education, sports, transportation and women.
Digitized from the collection of hard copies found in the Nina Mason Pulliam Indianapolis Special Collection Room at Central Library, the Chamber newsletters are the latest to be included in the Library’s online collection of historic images and recordings.
