Hart Bakery is a full line bakery that has been serving up the best cakes, cookies, doughnuts, breads, pastries, and brownies in town for many years. In 1946, “Uncle Joe” started the bakery after returning from World War II. Sandy Taylor, the current owner, came to work for him after training with Martha and Wesley Wilton in 1968. The Taylors bought the bakery in 1992. Now, Sandy’s son Dan, and daughter-in-law Cherice, a graduate of the Art Institute of Indianapolis, work at Hart Bakery. Recently, Hart Bakery added 1,500 square feet of working space to the building. Hart is the third oldest independent bakery in Indianapolis.
Sandy is a Certified Master Baker, and her son Dan is a graduate of the American Institute of Baking and the Kelly School of Business. They have carried on the tradition of great handmade baked goods you can’t get anywhere else, such as Uncle Joe’s melt-in-your-mouth Butter Cookies, Princess Bars, Crown Bread, Salt Risen Bread, and much more. They are also known for their fantastic doughnuts, eclairs, glazed croissants, coffee cakes, and bear claws. They also make stunning wedding cakes and special occasion cakes. Everything is made fresh, with no preservatives or chemicals.
Earlier this year, Hart Bakery introduced gourmet, handmade fudge to their lengthy list of treats. Check out the Tiger Stripe, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Pecan, or any of the over 200 seasonal flavors by the square or by the pound — it also makes a great gift for the holidays. Selections change frequently, so stop in regularly to see what’s new.
Hart Bakery and Gifts also has one of the biggest and best selections of gift items and one-of-a-kind collectibles in the Indianapolis area. They feature Precious Moments, Jim Shore, Painted Ponies, Steiff, Alexander, John R. Wright dolls and animals, Limoges boxes, and Ginny Dolls. They also have a selection of card making and scrapbooking supplies. They carry many hard-to-find items in their extensive gift shop.
Come to Hart Bakery’s Annual Open House on Sat., Nov. 30 and Sun., Dec 1 from 1-5 p.m. to meet the people who are carrying on a fine baking tradition, and pick up some wonderful treats to take home. This is the only Sunday of the year the bakery is open.
Hart Bakery is located at 7030 E. 10th Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46219. Call in your special orders at (317)357-4706. Their web site is www.hartbakery.com

The Warren Performing Arts Center (WPAC), located at 9500 E. 16th St., is a premier facility for concerts and shows on the east side. On the campus of Warren Central High School, the WPAC is noted for its wonderful acoustics and diverse programming. It is the only arts venue on the east side of Indianapolis with a full time professional staff.
For the past 30 years, WPAC has offered world class arts with a friendly local touch. Thousands of people from the Indianapolis metropolitan area have attended shows in the comfortable, spacious theater over the years, and look forward to each new season of diverse programming. With easy access from major highways, the WPAC is able to draw audiences from all over Central Indiana.
The WPAC was built in 1983 and the auditorium seats just under 1,000 patrons. There are actually two stages: the Mainstage Auditorium, and the Studio Theatre, which seats about 112.
The Warren Performing Arts Center is home to the 1926 Barton Theatre Organ. The organ is owned by the CIC-ATOS (Central Indiana Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society) and was installed at the Warren in 1997. The CIC-ATOS acquired this majestic instrument in 1990, and under the supervision of Carlton Smith its members rebuilt and restored the organ to its original condition. This organ was originally installed in the old Indiana Theatre in downtown Indianapolis (now the IRT), and now the Grande Barton plays in the WPAC before professional artists’ shows, at CIC-ATOS concerts, and more. Visit cicatos.org or call 251-6962 for information about upcoming shows.
The Indianapolis Symphonic Band is the Ensemble in Residence at WPAC and is also an arts partner with the venue. They perform free shows at WPAC regularly — the next one is on October 29 at 7 p.m.
The Warren Performing Arts Center hosts many Warren Township Schools concerts and plays. In addition, the venue hosts a Professional Series of entertainment every year. This year, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of WPAC, the most requested performers will be back on stage:
• War Bonds: The Songs and Letters of WWII on September 15 from 4:00-6:30 p.m. (Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 students and seniors.) A reception and 30th Anniversary celebration will follow the show.
• Ricky Skaggs January 19 at 4 p.m. (Tickets are $30 for adults, $28 students and seniors.)
• Purdue University Glee Club and the Singing Hoosiers: Together in Concert February 9 at 4 p.m. (Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for students and seniors.)
• The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra: Back Home Again in Indiana — The Music of Cole Porter & Hoagy Carmichael March 16 at 4 p.m. (Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 students and seniors.)
• Black Violin May 4 at 4 p.m. (Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors and students.)
Tickets for the Professional Series are available online through the Web site www.warrenpac.org or by calling the box office at 532-6280. Advance ticket sales are recommended as the shows sell out fast.

(Paid Business Advertorial)

Volunteers and staff of the Indiana Transportation Museum are wrapping up preparations for this year’s FairTrain™ the historic passenger train has run to the Indiana State Fair for 30 years.
The Museum’s authentic train from the 1940’s is a big part of the non-profit’s educational program and the FairTrain is one of its biggest fundraising projects. Riding it is also a way experienced Fair-goers beat the traffic and parking congestion.
The train travels the Nickel Plate Railroad from the Fairgrounds through Castleton to Fishers. Trains are scheduled every hour and a half in each direction. Details can be found on the Museum’s website at: ITM.org
“Boys and girls love the train,” said Museum Board member and professional librarian, Lavonne Stage. “It’s a great opportunity for families to spend time together. The anticipation and excitement of the journey fires up kids’ curiosity about the history, science and art of the railroad.”
“One of the big things we want to emphasize this year,” said Museum Chairman Jeff Kehler, “is that people can board the train at the Fairgrounds station and ride to Fishers and back. Studies found many people in Indianapolis didn’t know that was possible.” To increase accessibility, the Binford neighborhood group, BRAG, worked with the Museum to open a stop at 71st Street.
For those who ride to Fishers, a short stopover lets people stretch, look over the train and visit the Museum’s store in the station.
The Fishers station is located on 116th Street 5 blocks west of the I-69 Interchange. The Indianapolis station is on the east edge of the Fairgrounds at 39th Street. The 71st Street stop is located one block west of Graham Road just off Binford Boulevard. Free parking adds to the train’s convenience and is available at both the Fishers station and the 71st Street Kroger store, a block from the train stop.
Reservations are not needed. Space is available on a first-come basis. Tickets can be purchased at the Fishers station, at the 71st and Binford Kroger store and on the train at the Fairgrounds station. All tickets are round trip. Adult fares are $12, Youth fares for ages 2 to 12 are $8 and children under 2 who don’t occupy a seat ride free.
There’s nothing like the FairTrain. While historic trains run elsewhere, no other organization has ever run 18 trains a day, now for 17 days in a row, for 30 years. Museum staff proudly claim their railroad schedules as many daily trains and moves as many people during the Fair as some commuter railroad routes.
For over 100 years railroads were the biggest most important industry in America. They exerted a powerful influence on peoples’ imaginations and helped give rise to Americans’ characteristic determination and can-do attitude. They shaped many aspects of modern life from science and technology to finance, law and the arts. The train helps bring the railroads’ stories to life so they can inspire future generations with the ingenuity, daring and dedication of the past.
The FairTrain runs from 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. throughout the run of the Indiana State Fair, August 2-18. For more information visit ITM.org
