INDIANAPOLIS – The Department of Metropolitan Development and the Department of Public Works, in partnership with IndyGo, announced that Indianapolis has been chosen to participate in Transportation for America’s Smart Cities Collaborative. The program brings together cities with an aim to implement smart mobility policies and explore emerging technologies and mobility options.
Over the next year, Indianapolis will join twenty-one communities to share best practices in mobility and discover new technologies with a focus on reshaping the use of the right-of-way and curb space. The Smart Cities Collaborative focuses on the creation of city-specific goals and policies with curriculum regarding design, measurement, management, and the price of long-term transport infrastructure development.
Indianapolis will focus time and resources toward the development of “mobility hubs.” These mobility hubs will blend tranportation options — bus line, bike share stations, bike parking, and vehicle sharing – into several, centralized locations in walkable environments.
Indianapolis was selected from a group of 50 cities that applied to be a part of the Collaborative this year. The first meeting will be held in Denver April 16-17.
