INDIANAPOLIS — On April 30, officials celebrated the first conversion of a streetlight to energy-efficient LED technology. The conversion of 27,000 City-funded cobra head streetlights across Indianapolis comes as part of phase two of the Operation Night Light initiative.
Following an agreement reached with IPL last August, IPL crews began converting existing streetlights, and will continue through spring 2021, with the City paying all up-front costs — allowing Indianapolis taxpayers to benefit from the lowered energy use and maintenance costs of LED technology. The conversion, which only applies to traditional, cobra-head streetlight fixtures, will begin in Butler Tarkington, an area with a diverse in street types and streetlight fixtures, before continuing west to Pike Township.
The City expects to see several benefits from the conversion to energy-efficient LED technology, including increased safety from fuller light, reduced energy usage, and lower maintenance costs. The cost savings that result from the streetlight conversion will provide for the installation of up to 4,000 new streetlights in the darkest areas of Indianapolis. The new streetlights will be installed as savings are realized beginning in quarter 3 of 2018.
