INDIANAPOLIS — “Looking Up College Avenue” (LUCA), a project that has just been launched by its creators, John Sherman and Mayowa Tomori, offers a different approach to the study of historic preservation.
The LUCA booklet provides current photos of the tops of seven buildings, along with clues and information on the buildings and their environments. Students and adults are invited on a “historic treasure hunt” to find the buildings and answer questions about them. In the process, they will view historic photos of the structures, learn about the neighborhoods decades ago, and see the changes that have occurred along one of Indianapolis’ most historic streets. There is a space on each page where participants can draw or attach a photo of the building.
A public kick-off celebration for LUCA will be in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., on Sat., Sept. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. Free booklets and leader guides will be available and Sherman and Tomori will make brief remarks. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for the event, but participants should register at www.indianahistory.org/events/looking-up-college-ave-kick-off.
A meeting is being planned at the College Avenue branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library on September 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to hand out booklets and leader guides to teachers and others interested in participating in this treasure hunt.
