INDIANAPOLIS — “As the Rethink 65/70 Coalition faces an uphill battle against the state highway department’s 1960s vision for transportation in downtown Indianapolis, we’re screening a documentary for inspiration and guidance,” says Marsh Davis, president of Indiana Landmarks, a founding member of the coalition. On June 6, Indiana Landmarks is showing the film “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City,” about the legendary urban theorist and grassroots activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006).
Doors of Indiana Landmarks Center’s Grand Hall open at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and light refreshments. Davis offers a brief introduction at 6 p.m., suggesting how the film relates to the current Indianapolis issue. The film runs from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. Indiana Landmarks Center is located at 1201 Central Ave.
Cost of the film is $10 per person, with a discount for Indiana Landmarks’ members. Advance purchase is advised, online at janejacobsdocumentary.eventbrite.com or by calling Indiana Landmarks, 317-639-4534.
Jacobs’s 1961 book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, is regarded as one of the most influential books in the history of American city planning and community development. When she lived in New York City, Jacobs led successful grassroots campaigns in the ‘50s and ‘60s against the powerful public works/parks/transit czar Robert Moses. Director Matt Tyrnauer brings to life the showdown with Moses, using Marisa Tomei as the voice of Jane Jacobs, when she opposed his plan to destroy Washington Square Park and demolish much of Greenwich Village to carve an expressway through lower Manhattan.

INDIANAPOLIS — “Looking Up College Avenue” (LUCA), a project that has just been launched by its creators, John Sherman and Mayowa Tomori, offers a different approach to the study of historic preservation.
The LUCA booklet provides current photos of the tops of seven buildings, along with clues and information on the buildings and their environments. Students and adults are invited on a “historic treasure hunt” to find the buildings and answer questions about them. In the process, they will view historic photos of the structures, learn about the neighborhoods decades ago, and see the changes that have occurred along one of Indianapolis’ most historic streets. There is a space on each page where participants can draw or attach a photo of the building.
A public kick-off celebration for LUCA will be in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., on Sat., Sept. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. Free booklets and leader guides will be available and Sherman and Tomori will make brief remarks. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for the event, but participants should register at www.indianahistory.org/events/looking-up-college-ave-kick-off.
A meeting is being planned at the College Avenue branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library on September 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to hand out booklets and leader guides to teachers and others interested in participating in this treasure hunt.

INDIANAPOLIS — For those who like to shop for antiques, collectibles, architectural salvage and yard sale deals, Treasure Hunt is a summer highlight. Sponsored by Indiana Landmarks and the Old Northside neighborhood, the event on July 11 will feature more than 40 booths of antiques inside and outdoors at Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., and on the lawn of the adjacent Morris-Butler House, 1204 North Park Ave.
The fourth annual Treasure Hunt runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. At Indiana Landmarks Center and Morris-Butler House, admission is free from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Early admission to cherry-pick great finds, from 8 to 9 a.m., costs $5 per person.
Music on the plaza, an art show in the gallery, and food add to the festive atmosphere. Between Central and Park, 12th Street will be closed to traffic and lined with food trucks, with tables and chairs for on-street dining.
An estimated 30 private homeowners throughout the Old Northside Historic District, as well as All Saints Episcopal Church at 16th and Central, will host yard sales. Maps listing Treasure Hunt yard sale locations will be available on July 11 at Indiana Landmarks Center.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Landmarks will offer tours in Indianapolis May through October, exploring some of the lesser known historic areas of the city.
On the Monument Circle Tours, a guide relates the story of Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the roundabout’s role in the original design of the city, and talks about the historic buildings and architecture around the Circle. The tour departs at 10 a.m. every Friday and Saturday, May through October from South Bend Chocolate Co., 30 Monument Circle, weather permitting. The tour is $8 for adults, $5 for children and Indiana Landmarks members in advance; $10 per person on site. Register online at circletours2015.eventbrite.com.
In the City Market Catacombs Tour, expanses of Roman-looking brick arches have long fascinated people who’ve had the chance to see them. Indiana Landmarks takes visitors on a tour of this unique space on the first and third Saturdays from May to October. The area is not handicapped accessible. The tour departs from west plaza of City Market, 222. E. Market St., at 11 and 11:30 a.m., noon, 12:30 and 1 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children, with discounts for Indiana Landmarks members. Capacity is limited and registration is required at catacombs2015.eventbrite.com or by calling 317-639-4534.
Indiana Landmarks turned a vacant historic church with a giant hole in the domed ceiling into a $20 million complex of restored theaters, reception hall, art gallery, and the nonprofit organization’s office. The Indiana Landmarks Center Tour covers the buildings’ history, beginning with its time as home to the largest Methodist congregation in the state, repurposing and restoration. Reservations are not required for the tour of Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., which begins at noon every Friday and Saturday from May through October.
