INDIANAPOLIS —Mark your calendar for the annual Feast of Lanterns on August 24 at Spades Park on the near eastside of Indianapolis.
The Near East Side Community Organization proudly presents an annual Feast of Lanterns, a beautiful century old outdoor event, in the 1800 block of Nowland Ave., Spades Park. Beginning at noon, the Feast offers up the day for the family of original art, food, exhibitors, local vendors, a lantern auction, and lots of great activities for kids including games, and hands-on projects. Live music on two stages begins at noon, continues throughout the day, into the evening. As dusk falls, the ceremonial lighting of hundreds of lanterns creates a summer wonderland in the park. It is a not-to-be-missed sight.
This year, the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association will be hosting their first-ever Beer Garden at the Feast, just across Nowland across from the Spades Park Library. Craft beers from all over the city will be available, as will be wine by the glass. Proceeds go to the Feast of Lanterns fund and Windsor Park Neighborhood Association.
This will be the 11th year for the resurrected Feast of Lanterns, which was celebrated for many years, then forgotten until 2002. The NESCO neighborhoods decided to bring the Feast back to Spades Park, and it has grown every year since its re-launch.

From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, August 24, 1913: The Feast of Lanterns given last night by the Brookside Civic League in Spades Park was one of the most beautiful events of its kind seen in Indianapolis for many years. Thousands of lanterns were strung throughout the park, along the street surrounding it, and on Brookside Av almost to 10th St. The refreshment stands were also decorated with lanterns. Eight to ten thousand people visited the park during the evening and the grounds were filled with people at all times. The streets leading to and from the park were crowded with visitors up to mid-night. A concert was given by the Letter Carriers Band and donkey cart and automobile rides were enjoyed by many. Half of the proceeds will be divided between Cheeryvale and the Summer Mission camps.

• The Indiana State Fair App on your smartphone is really useful for plotting your route to your favorite destinations and food vendors. “Let’s see, on the way to the Free Stage from here, we’re passing the kettle corn place and fried butter stand, which is next to the lemon shake-ups.” Ah, technology, thou art beautiful.
• Big shout-out to a successful Ice Cream Social at the Irvington Historical Society. The jazz band was great, the weather was perfect, and it went without a hitch. Thank you to Wyliepalooza for donating ice cream!
• ABC News on Aug. 2 featured an eastsider, Danielle Emerson Beck, and her Web site, Indy Lost Pets, in their role in exposing a “pet flipper” in town.
• Looking forward to seeing The Man Who Came to Dinner at the Irvington Presbyterian Church Aug. 16. The church has been been doing some innovative programs for the community.
• The Feast of Lanterns will be happening Aug. 24, and they need volunteers to help set up, sit in booths, etc. To sign up to volunteer, visit www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/595497876068 with your information.
• On Aug. 10, Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn will conduct a free children’s health fair featuring sports physicals, immunizations and exciting children’s games. The annual Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn Children’s Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn, 2700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. in Indianapolis.
• St. Philip Neri Church in conjunction with Englewood Church is hosting a “Celebration of our Community in Peace” at St. Philip Neri Church, 550 N. Rural on Aug. 6 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. There will be grilling hamburgers, snacks and drinks. There will also be entertainment for all ages. They are requesting that folks RSVP by calling the parish office at 317-631-8746.
• The last launch party for Ichabod’s Sketchbook will be held Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Bookmamas in Irvington. Readings begin at about 7 p.m. The books have featured many good local writers over the past few years. Also, Katie Darby Mullins, Stephanie French-Mischo and Matt Young will be reading from their works published by Midwestern Gothic at Bookmamas, on August 16 at 6:30 p.m. For those of us who love the written word, it’s nice to have a local spot to buy books by locals.
• The Vulgar Boatmen will be performing Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. at Broad Ripple Park, 1550 Broad Ripple Ave. This is part of the “Pay What You Want” series. Get tickets are Indy.gov/concerts — all of the proceeds go to support the Indianapolis Parks Foundation.

• On Friday afternoon, Indy Lost Pet Alert reported that a wallaby in Lawrence had gone missing. His name was Irwin and he was someone’s pet. Everyone was on the lookout for the little guy. However, on Monday, Irwin’s body was found in the area. Coyotes may have gotten it — there have been several reports of coyotes in the area.
• Mid-month, the City of Lawrence took matters into their own hands in dealing with sub-standard housing. After trying to work with the landlord of 42 St. Apartments to bring their buildings up to code, the Mayor and other authorities took action and announced they were shutting the place down and marking it for demolition. The Lawrence and Warren Township Trustee offices are helping people who currently live in the complex find new, safer housing.
• National Night Out is Aug. 6. Even if your neighborhood doesn’t have an “official” event planned, turn on your porch light, sit outside (weather permitting) and greet your neighbors. Letting the baddies know that there are watchful citizens living on the street means they’ll think twice about committing crimes. Encourage your neighbors to also turn on their lights.
• Have you been to a lantern making workshop yet? Join others for the Feast of Lantern lantern making workshops on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. at the Chase Legacy Center, 725 N. Oriental now until Aug. 21. The lanterns will be used for the annual Feast of Lanterns on Aug. 24 at Spades Park. It’s free.
• Beech Grove will hold its monthly City Council meeting Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers, 806 Main St. The meeting is open to the public.
• Greenfield has a new weather station and camera for the Beckenholdt Environmental Engagement Lab. The Hancock County Community Foundation provided the grant that allows the community to see weather and climate information in real-time, and is a critical component in the Greenfield Central HS Science Dept. Earth Science curriculum.
• There is a covered bridge on the Indiana State Fairgrounds, with the inscription “Cross This Bridge at a Walk.” What does that mean, exactly? After some painstaking research, we found that it comes from the late 1880s, when teams of horses would trot across the bridge and the vibration of the wheels and horses would damage the bridge. The phrase was to remind covered bridge users to slow down — a reminder we can use today in the age of rush, rush, rush.
• Buck Creek Players wrap up their 39th season with their 5th Play-A-Part fundraiser of the hit musical Oklahoma! There are only four performances, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m., Aug. 3 at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $25 and tickets can be purchased online at www.buckcreekplayers.com or calling 862-2270.
