This Friday, March 1, the Weekly View’s correspondent Peter Kuhns will be on location at NASA’s Cape Canaveral in Florida for the second launch of a SpaceX rocket destined for the Space Station. SpaceX, a private company, is scheduled to launch its Falcon 9 rocket on a resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The Falcon 9 carries the “Dragon” capsule, a human-rated capsule that will only carry supplies this visit to the ISS.
The success of the SpaceX rocket has been noteworthy: three out of three successful launches in a row; the first private corporation to orbit the earth; and the first private corporation to dock with the space station. SpaceX is headquartered in El Segundo, California, where their rockets are built. The launch will occur at Cape Canaveral’s Launch Complex 40, where the U.S. Air Force launched Titan IV rockets from 1965 to 2005. (One of the Titan IV’s launched from Complex 40 carried the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft currently orbiting Saturn.)
This is an exciting launch, and Peter was invited to join other reporters to cover this event. Expect a follow-up article in next week’s edition — we’re thrilled to be able to bring you the “inside scoop” from the launch pad!
