INDIANAPOLIS — According to the Indianapolis branch of the National Weather Service, a brief EF-1 tornado touched down on May 30 at 8:47 p.m. near the intersection of Southeastern and Irvington Avenues. The estimated peak wind was 90 mph, and the path of the tornado was about one-third of a mile and about 40 yards wide. The tornado was only on the ground about a minute, but downed trees and powerlines.
Northeast on Irvington Avenue, a home sustained roof damage and two automobiles were tossed on top of each other. Trees blocked Irvington Ave. south of Hawthorne. The most extensive damage was found along pommel court. Two homes sustained significant damage. One home had its garage door blown inwards with the garage lifted slightly off its foundation and damage to its roof. The second home also sustained damage to the garage door and a gazebo on the property was destroyed. A nearby trailer was tossed into a pond just northeast of the two homes. The damage path ended north of the pond where a few additional trees were knocked down. No injuries were reported.
The tornado was part of a severe thunderstorm system that moved through the area on Saturday, bringing high winds and torrential rains that caused local street flooding.
